Senior Gina Valgoi qualified for the Nov. 17 NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky. with a sixth-place finish at the Midwest Regionals in Springfield, Mo. on Nov. 9. Valgoi finished with a time of 20:37 in the women’s 6K, helping Loyola’s women’s squad to an 11th place finish.
“I am so proud of how far this young lady has come,” said Head Coach Randy Hasenbank after the meet. “She’s a very inspiring kid to watch.”
The men finished 10th overall, led by sophomore Sam Penzenstadler’s 43rd place finish.
“I thought the men competed very well today,” Hasenbank told loyolaramblers.com. “We lost four of our top five from last year’s meet, yet we still improved one spot.”
Following a 3-2 loss to UIC on Nov. 10, Loyola was slotted into the fourth seed for the Horizon League Championship. Coming off of a 16-11 record season that included an 8-6 mark in Horizon League play, the Ramblers will take on fifth-seed Green Bay on Nov. 16 in Cleveland, Ohio. If they win, they will take on top seed Cleveland State on Nov. 17.
The Ramblers also placed four players on all-league teams. Senior Anna Eytchison (outside hitter) and freshmen Brittany Brown (setter), Stephanie Kinane (libero, see pg. 21) and Kathleen Vogel (outside hitter) all made the Horizon League All-Newcomer team. Eytchison was also named to the All-Horizon League team and was named Newcomer of the Year.
