Predicted to finish seventh in the Horizon League Preseason Poll by the other coaches in the league, Loyola’s men’s basketball team has been proving the doubters wrong so far this season.
Coming off a huge win against DePaul on Dec. 29, the Ramblers carried their success into the new year with a 63-54 win over Valparaiso University Wed., Jan. 2. The win, the team’s 10th of the season, has already surpassed last season’s total of seven and the Ramblers aren’t slowing down.
Valpo is coming off an NCAA tournament appearance last season and were one of the favorites in the preseason poll. Coming into the game, Valparaiso was shooting almost 50 percent from the floor, but the Rambler’s defense held the Crusaders to only 36 percent shooting on the night.
The team was lead by Senior forward Ben Averkamp who tallied a team high 16 points on the night. Sophomore Joe Crisman and junior Cully Payne also finished in double digit scoring on the night.
Loyola returns to the Gentile Arena on Saturday, Jan. 5 for the first time since defeating Mississippi State in the Game of Change rematch on Dec. 15. The game starts at 3:00 P.M.
