Fashion Forecast: The Academy Awards

With fashionistas already swooning over New York Fashion Week earlier this month, what is perhaps the most star-studded fashion event is right around the corner. Referred to by many as the “Super Bowl” of awards shows, the Academy Awards will bring out the best fashion that Hollywood has to offer.

Leading up to the biggest night in movies, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres March 2, we’ve seen the stars battle for best-dressed at the Golden Globes, SAGs and Critics’ Choice Awards. So let’s take a look back at who’s made the biggest statement so far this season and a look forward to who will be one to watch out for come Oscar Sunday:

Lupita Nyong’o

The Best Supporting Actress nominee is a new face to the Hollywood scene. After her role in 12 Years a Slave, Lupita stole the show at the Golden Globes with her Ralph Lauren Cape Dress. She followed that up at the SAG Awards with a beautiful turquoise Gucci Gown, and even left with a trophy. Ever since her first major red carpet, she’s been unstoppable.

Jennifer Lawrence

Surprise, surprise: J-Law is one to watch on the red carpet. The American Hustle star and Best Supporting Actress nominee is also the face of Dior and will no doubt be wearing the designer’s work. Her red carpet looks this year (particularly the one at the Golden Globes) were met with mixed reviews and many internet memes saying her white dress resembled a bed sheet. Regardless, she usually pulls out a winning look at the Oscars, and could even pull out another win.

Cate Blanchett

She is the front-runner to win the Oscar for Best Actress, but will she win points for her gown? Probably. Blanchett is known for wearing more intricate, right-off-the-runway pieces and not caring about the critics. The Oscars will likely be no different. Her style is typically edgy Hollywood glamour, as seen with her black Armani Prive dress at the Golden Globes.

Matthew McConaughey

Awards shows usually leave little room for the men to shine, but McConaughey has stood out all the right reasons this awards season. The Dallas Buyers Club Best Actor-nominee has sported colored suit jackets, such as the green velvet number he wore to the Globes and gold ensemble he wore to a premiere in Palm Springs, showing he isn’t afraid to take a risk. And having wife Camila Alves on his arm doesn’t hurt either.

Amy Adams

Amy Adams isn’t known for her fashion, but she always seems to get it right on the red carpet. The five-time Oscar nominee’s signature snow-white complexion and red locks always look beautiful against color, like at the SAG awards. I can’t wait to see what she wears at the Oscars.

So many stars will shine on the red carpet, but these five will be ones to watch for the biggest fashion moments. Although it’s fun to see who is the best-dressed, it’s even more fun to see who has a fashion flop. Tune in to E! to watch its coverage of the red carpet, live on March 2 at 4 p.m.
