Emails about the Weekend of Excellence have been flooding Loyola inboxes since the beginning of the semester. Between invites, nominations and calls to vote, some are still in the dark about what exactly the weekend is. This week’s PHOENIX 101 is going to clear all that up.
What is the Weekend of Excellence?
The Weekend of Excellence is all about honoring students, organizations, faculty and staff for their achievements from the current school year. Starting April 16, different departments will showcase their best work, and on April 18 the Excellence Award ceremony is slated to take place in the Sr. Jean Dolores Schmidt MPR at 7 p.m.
What are the different awards?
There are 14 categories — including eight student diversity awards — that students, organizations, faculty and staff can win. There two Damen Awards; one goes to a student who is a community leader and embodies Jesuit ideals, and one that goes to an organization with the same qualifications. Freshmen can apply to win the 1870 Award, which celebrates students who have fulfilled the “Year One Goals” of “The Loyola Experience,” including building relationships, participating in and outside of class and demonstrating an understanding of Loyola’s mission. Loyola alumni are recognized with the Set the World on Fire Award, which honors graduates who work at the university and demonstrate a commitment to the school’s mission.
Other distinctions include the Transformative Education Award, the Lifelong Commitment to Justice Award and the Emerging Leader Award.
What are some of the other events?
The graduate and undergraduate research symposia are expected to take place on April 18 at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively. For those interested in something a little more musical, the Spring Honors Recital — which features vocal and instrumental performances by students — is scheduled for April 18 at 7 p.m. in Skowronski Music Hall in the Mundelein Center. An organ concert, featuring Loyola senior music major Anthony Jurich, is also slated to take place at Madonna della Strada on April 19 at 3 p.m. For a full list of events, click here.
