What went down: No. 2 seed Southern Illinois University (19-12, 11-7) took on No. 7 seed Missouri State University (18-15, 7-11) in the fifth game of Arch Madness March 2. The Salukis beat the Bears 67-63.
How it happened: SIU led Missouri State for 22:14 and held the Bears’ top scorer, senior forward Alize Johnson, to just 6 points. SIU head coach Barry Hinson said the turning point of the game was when junior forward Rudy Stradnieks sank his first three pointer in the first half.
Analysis: SIU had five players score in the double figures. Junior guard Sean Lloyd led the team with 13 points. Although the Salukis came out on top, senior forward Jarrid Rhodes led all scorers with 21 points. SIU had a 14 point lead with six minutes left in the second half but Missouri State went on a 12-point run to bring the game within two points. A layup by Lloyd pushed the Salukis out of reach and won them the game.
What’s next? The Salukis are scheduled to play the winner of game 6 in the Arch Madness semifinals March 3 at 5 p.m.
