The Loyola men’s volleyball team (23-7, 11-3) was swept 3-0 by No. 1 seed The Ohio State University in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) tournament championship game April 21. The Ramblers still have a chance for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and will learn whether or not their season’s over during the tournament selection show April 22.
Loyola couldn’t find a rhythm during the first set, falling to the two-time defending national champions 25-20. The Ramblers led by as much as five points during the second set, but the Buckeyes came back to win 25-23. After trailing 8-2 early in the third set, Loyola got within two points before Ohio State, which hosted the match, pulled away to win the set 25-19 to complete the sweep of the MIVA regular season co-champions.
Junior outside hitter Collin Mahan led Loyola with nine kills, followed by senior opposite Ricky Gevis’ seven. Both were named to the MIVA All-Tournament Team. First-year setter Garrett Zolg also contributed 23 assists and junior libero Avery Aylsworth had 10 digs.
Ohio State will head to the NCAA Tournament with MIVA’s automatic bid. Loyola will find out if it’s one of two at-large bids during the selection show April 22 at noon. The show will air at NCAA.com.
