Students staying in Chicago this summer can now enjoy a drink at Argo Tea, which opened a new location Monday afternoon near Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus (LSC).
Argo Tea is located under the Hampton Inn hotel at 6576 N. Sheridan Road. It was expected to open by spring this year, The Phoenix previously reported. Newton Camp, a supervisor at the LSC location, said the opening was delayed due to building construction and obtaining permits for equipment.
Camp, 38, said the opening was highly anticipated with people from the neighborhood stopping by before its official opening at 4 p.m.
“We had a meeting earlier with the district leaders and people thought we were open, so they kept coming into the store,” Camp said.
Camp said the new Argo Tea location is one of two neighborhood locations in Chicago. There are 10 Argo Tea locations in downtown Chicago, including two stores near Loyola’s Water Tower Campus. The second northside location is in Lakeview at 3135 N. Broadway St.
The shop has a crisp, modern interior painted with gentle earth tones. A minimalist fireplace with false flames sits at the center of the floor, and the space is well lit. Argo Tea offers a variety of hot and iced teas, coffee and food. Customers are also able to purchase loose-leaf tea to brew at home.
Rising junior Ella Nettnin, an employee at the LSC location, said she likes the Mate Latte drink because of its sweet flavor and high caffeine content. Nettnin, 19, said the new shop is conveniently located for the Loyola community.
“It’s great for students because coffee and tea is like a perfect thing, and it’s a nice place to study,” the neuroscience and biology double major said. “Argo in general is a great company.”
Vincent Acuesta, a rising senior and Argo Tea employee, echoed Nettnin’s thoughts, saying he thinks the shop will be a nice spot for productivity.
“The cafe is designed perfectly for studying and for individuals to have meetings,” the 21-year-old bioinformatics major said.
Rising sophomore George Hildebrandt said he thinks Argo Tea is a nice spot for people who prefer a more laid-back environment.
“Metropolis [coffee shop] is always a really cool place to spend your Sunday to study, but it’s always super crowded. So I’m looking forward to having this be a cool spot,” the 19-year-old chemistry major said.
Graduating senior Monika Kordek said the place stood out to her because it focuses on tea instead of coffee.
“I think it’s something different than coffee shops,” the 23-year-old psychology major said. “I’m a huge fan of tea and the environment of this place is a great place to hang out.”
Argo Tea is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The store does not accept Rambler Bucks.
