Women’s Soccer Selected to Host 2018 MVC Tournament

Hoyne Field is located at Devon and Hoyne, just one mile west of Loyola's Lake Shore Campus.

Loyola was selected to host the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) women’s soccer tournament, MVC commissioner Doug Elgin announced Thursday afternoon.

The proposed sites for women’s soccer and all other sports the MVC offers were approved by the MVC’s Joint Committee, which is made up of faculty athletics representatives, athletics directors and senior woman administrators of each school. The MVC Presidents’ Council will vote to ratify Elgin’s recommendation June 13-14.

The tournament will begin with games Oct. 28 at other campuses which will be determined based on the final standings. The semifinals and championship will be Nov. 2-4 at Hoyne Field, located one mile west of Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus at Devon and Hoyne.

“We are very excited to host the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Championship,” head coach Barry Bimbi said in a statement. “We have seen for the past three years what a great experience this weekend is for student-athletes, and we will do our best to showcase what Loyola University and the city of Chicago has to offer.”

In September, The Phoenix reported Loyola had a home-field advantage due to the unique layout of Hoyne Field. The softball team also plays at Hoyne, so right field bleeds into the soccer field. Hoyne’s bleachers are also slightly off-centered and the locker rooms are close to the sideline, which allows the fans to be close to the action and leaves little room for throw-ins. The women’s soccer team went 7-2-0 at Hoyne last season.

The Ramblers finished 13-7-0 last season and are set to return 20 letterwinners, including All-MVC nominees Jenna Szczesny and Sienna Cruz.
