Five Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers and a cyclist were hospitalized for minor injuries after a series of traffic accidents during a car chase Tuesday afternoon near Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus, according to CPD News Affairs Officer Michael Carroll.

Carroll said a male was driving a 2006 Mazda SUV when he struck a male cyclist near North Ave. and N. Clark St. The driver fled and police began to follow him, then the driver backed up into the police vehicle on Lake Shore Drive near Fullerton Ave.

The driver collided with another police vehicle near Lake Shore Drive and N. Recreation Dr., according to Carroll. Another police vehicle was struck at N. Clark St. and W. Rosemont Ave., just over half a mile from Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus.

The offender was taken into custody and transported to St. Francis Hospital. He was identified as Gabriel Diaz-Soto, 27. Diaz-Soto has been charged with five felony counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer and four other counts, including DUI intoxicating compounds, negligent driving, failure to stay in lane and driving with a suspended license.

This post has been updated to identify the offender and indicate his criminal charges.
