Loyola Phoenix

Ask Amy for 9/5/18

Hi Amy,

I’m a freshman at Loyola this year and it’s the first time I’ve ever had a roommate. I thought your college roommate was supposed to be your best friend, but we never really talk. It feels awkward and uncomfortable. I’m not sure how to start being friends with her. Am I doing something wrong?

Dear Confused in Campion,

It’s okay not to be best friends with your college roommate, not everyone is. But you do want to be friends, or at least get along well. Start by asking her about her day, her classes or her professors, something simple that’ll start a conversation. You’ll find you have something in common, whether it’s having a difficult class or trying to find the perfect place to study on campus. You can also suggest getting lunch together in the dining hall and make it a weekly thing! Slowly, you’ll become friends and have that close relationship  you’re looking for. Good luck!
