Shooting Leaves Man Dead Near West Sherwin

Courtesy of Tony WebsterTwo shootings and two attempted armed robberies were reported in the past week near campus.

A man was found dead Sunday on the 1400 block of West Sherwin with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Chicago Police Officer Michael Carroll.

The man, 73, was found deceased about 1.5 miles from Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus. An initial investigation revealed the victim may have been shot by robbers, according to Carroll. The man was walking his dogs when the incident occurred, according to a Facebook post by 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore in a group used by many Rogers Park community members called “Rogers Park Neighborhood News.”

The incident is the most recent in a streak of crimes near campus. A man attempted to rob a student near a Loyola residence hall Saturday. A few days prior, a student was approached by a man holding a firearm Sept. 26 during an attempted robbery less than a block away from campus.

On Sept. 17, a Loyola student was beaten and robbed three blocks away from campus, on North Lakewood Avenue.

In July, a string of three shootings during the span of two days left the three victims hospitalized. It was unclear of the incidents were connected.

There have been no arrests and Area North Detectives are investigating.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact the Chicago Police Department at (312) 744-8263 or 911.
