The Loyola women’s volleyball team (11-6, 3-2) fell to Drake University 3-1 at Gentile Arena Saturday night for its second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference loss.
“Drake played really well,” Loyola head coach Amanda Berkley said after the match. “I thought they dug a lot of balls and frustrated our hitters … I think we’ve got to learn from this match and come ready to play on Friday because I think Valparaiso [University] is going to be tough team to play.”
The Ramblers came out strong, leading the first set 15-12 at the media break. After the timeout, the Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run to tie the game 15-15. Both teams traded points, but Drake took the set 25-22.
In the second set, Drake went on a 10-3 run to take control early. The Ramblers were able to claw back and reduce the Bulldogs’ lead to 19-18. But Drake pulled away, scoring the six of the last seven points to win the second set 25-19.
Loyola took control during the third set, going on a 7-0 scoring run right off the bat. Although the Bulldogs fought back, it wasn’t enough as the Ramblers went on an 8-0 run to win the set 25-14 and cut Drake’s lead to 2-1.
After Drake took a 12-6 lead in the fourth set, Loyola tied the set 18-18. The Ramblers kept pace the rest of the way, but couldn’t complete the comeback as they dropped the set 25-23.
“We had that big lead in the third [set and] I think they started catching up a little bit, so we felt that pressure and I think we responded really well going into the fourth,” senior outside hitter Gabi Maciagowski said. “We let them push back a little too much and that cost us the [fourth] set.”
Four Ramblers tallied double-digit kills — Maciagowski led with 14, junior outside hitter Quinn Spieker had 13, redshirt junior right side hitter Heather Kocken had 12 and senior outside hitter Morgan Gresham had 11. Gresham also had 11 digs while junior setter Delilah Wolf had 48 assists and 12 digs.
The Ramblers are scheduled to take on Valparaiso Oct. 5 in Valparaiso, Indiana.
