Five males were arrested following a carjacking on the 5800 block of North Winthrop Avenue on Thursday just after midnight, five blocks from Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus, according to the Chicago Police Department (CPD).
A 47-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint by the offenders as she was parking her car, according to CPD. They demanded her vehicle, took the keys out of her hand, hopped into the 2006 Lexus SUV and took off. The victim wasn’t injured.
Police soon spotted the vehicle heading south on Lake Shore Drive, and followed it, with the occupants of the stolen vehicle stopping on the 5500 block of South Lake Shore Drive and taking off on foot.
They were soon caught.
Four adults — Raynell Lanford, Javion Bush, Jamaal Ashshaheed, Jamar Jarvus — were each charged with two felony counts of vehicular hijacking and attempted vehicular hijacking, both with a firearm, authorities said. A juvenile was charged with one felony and one misdemeanor for unlawful use of weapons and criminal trespass, CPD said.
This incident followed a string of crimes near the Lake Shore Campus that set the community on high alert, including fatal shootings on the 1400 block of West Sherwin Avenue and the 1100 block of West Lunt Avenue earlier in October.
