No. 2 seed Drake University beat No. 6 seed University of Evansville 1-0 in the first semifinal match of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament at Loyola Soccer Park Friday night.
The first half was slow to start as neither team scored. Drake had more shots on goal (SOG) than Evansville with a total of 10 shots compared to the Purple Aces’ two SOG.
In the second half, Evansville’s goalkeeper kept up the pressure and continued to knock away shots. The back-and-forth game continued with some aggressiveness from both teams, as Drake sophomore forward Hannah Bormann received a yellow card early in the second half.
Regulation ended with the two teams tied 0-0 and headed into two rounds of 10-minute, sudden-death overtime. The first 10 minutes ended scoreless despite the many chances both the Bulldogs and Purple Aces created.
In the 103rd minute, just three minutes into the second overtime period, Drake first-year midfielder Libby Helverson put the ball in the back of the net to win the game.
Drake now advances to the championship game Nov. 4 against the winner of the second semifinal game, which is scheduled to be between Loyola and Illinois State University at 6:30 p.m. Friday night.
