The Loyola women’s basketball team (6-8, 12-13) fell to Southern Illinois University (SIU) 64-41 Friday night at Gentile Arena, snapping a two-game win streak.
Sophomore guard Abby O’Connor led the team with 17 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Tiara Wallace also had seven boards.
“I just don’t think we played well today,” Loyola head coach Kate Achter said. “Case in point, we went 5-[for]-13 from the free throw line and only got six assists. Maybe it’s a transition point, I don’t know.”
The Salukis, who went into the game in eighth place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, secured the win after a close loss to fourth place Illinois State University last Sunday. Nicole Martin led SIU with 17 points.
The Ramblers took the lead in the first quarter after a three-pointer from O’Connor. The Salukis came up to make it 9-8, but Loyola held the lead to finish out the quarter.
The second quarter saw a three-minute scoring drought for SIU, which gave the Ramblers a chance to bring the lead up to 18-14. The Ramblers only made one out of seven shots by the halfway point of the quarter, allowing Loyola to drop its lead and SIU finished half leading 23-21.

In the third quarter, after a 6-0 run from the Salukis, SIU created a 13-point lead over the Ramblers with less than three minutes remaining. The quarter finished out with a score of 43-26 Salukis lead as the Ramblers only made four out of 27 shots between the second and third quarters.
“To me, it’s more of a confidence thing than anything else,” Achter said. “We got open looks. We didn’t finish them.”
SIU held up the lead in the fourth, and the Ramblers weren’t able come back, even with shots from sophomore guard Ellie Rice and O’Connor. The Salukis finished off the Ramblers with a final score of 64-41.
The Ramblers are set to take on Missouri State University Feb. 24 at Gentile Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
