Officials from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the death which occurred Wednesday afternoon in Baumhart Residence Hall (42 E. Pearson St.) on Loyola’s Water Tower Campus was a suicide.

Campus Ministry emailed a bereavement notice to the Loyola community Thursday afternoon and said the student who died was Sean Hellems, a graduate student in the School of Social Work. Natalia Derevyanny, the director of communications for the medical examiner’s office, identified the student.

Goutham M. Menon, a dean and professor in the School of Social Work, said in the email Hellems was academically gifted and engaged in the community.

“Those who knew Sean, remember him as being extremely talented academically and engaged with everyone in meaningful ways,” Menon said. “He was prepared to become an excellent social work professional before his untimely death.”

A 24-hour suicide prevention hotline is available at 1-800-273-8255, and Loyola’s Wellness Center (773-508-2530) offers suicide prevention services as well.
