The Loyola women’s basketball team has some big shoes to fill after junior forward Abby O’Connor announced on Twitter she’s transferring to Gonzaga University at the end of the semester.

O’Connor was one of Loyola head coach Kate Achter’s first recruits in 2017 and made an instant impact on the court. In her three years at Loyola, O’Connor averaged 12.5 points per game and 7 rebounds per game. This year, she led the Ramblers with 12.3 points and 8 rebounds per game.
She was named All-Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) honorable mention this season after receiving All-MVC first team and MVC All-Defense Team honors a year ago. Her departure leaves the Ramblers without two of their top three scorers from this year since senior guard Tiara Wallace — who averaged 10.1 points per game — is set to graduate. O’Connor declined to comment.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, O’Connor has to sit out the 2020-21 season.
The South Bend, Indiana native is also the third player to leave the Loyola women’s basketball program this year. Senior guard Jazmine Covington left for personal reasons just prior to the season and sophomore guard Maya Dunson did the same mid-year.
Gonzaga, located in Spokane, Washington, went 28-3 this past season and finished the year ranked No. 11 in the USA Today coaches poll. The Bulldogs have also won 14 West Coast Conference titles since 2005.
