Illinois Hits 56,055 COVID-19 Cases With 2,457 Total Deaths

bebarnes | PixabayMost of Illinois will officially allow activities such as outdoor dining, salons and gatherings of 10 or less people to resume today, but Chicago isn’t moving as fast.

Officials from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported 3,137 new cases of COVID-19 and an additional 105 deaths, pushing the state’s total to 56,055 confirmed cases with 2,457 total deaths. 

Cases are reported in 97 of Illinois’ 102 counties, with most of the cases concentrated in the Chicago/Cook County area, with 38,668 confirmed cases in total. The Rogers Park-Edgewater neighborhoods — zip codes 60626 and 60660 respectively — have 744 confirmed cases of the virus, according to the IDPH website

May 1 marked the start of the state’s new face mask requirement in public areas where social distancing can’t be followed, such as grocery stores. Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order has been extended till May 29.
