Maya Chandler Wins Freshman of the Year in MVC Women’s Basketball Individual Awards

Taking home the only individual award for the Ramblers women’s basketball team, first-year guard Maya Chandler won the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Freshman of the Year title in the awards announced March 11

The Martinsville, Ind. native averaged 8.1 points per game during the regular season for Loyola while playing an average of 26 minutes per contest, and starting in all 22 games. Chandler put up double-digit points eight times and scored a season-high 18 points against Illinois State University March 6. She also shot 38.5% from three-point territory, tying with junior forward Allison Day for second-highest percentage on the team. 

Five other player awards were announced in the press release — Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Player of the Year and Most Improved Player — along with Coach of the Year. Missouri State University and Drake University took home two awards each while Illinois State brought home one.

After being picked to come in eighth out of 10 teams in the preseason poll, Chandler and the Ramblers are now the No. 6 seed in the MVC Tournament. Loyola will play its first game of Hoops in the Heartland against No. 3-seeded Illinois State March 12. 

Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
