A Stylish Guide to ‘It Girl’ Holiday Gifts

Natalie Doyle | The PhoenixSleeping masks can be helpful for avoiding dry skin during winter.

The holidays are here, and while shopping for someone — or making a wishlist — stylish can be stressful, The Phoenix has compiled a list of potential gifts inspired by some of Loyola’s spiffiest students.

Puffer Jackets

“Are you from New York even? Do you have a big black puffer jacket, even?”

The puffer jacket has been around for a while and isn’t going anywhere — it’s become a winter fashion-must and one of the best ways to keep warm during the cold months. While black is a great neutral puffer to add to your wardrobe, don’t shy away from colors this winter either, according to sophomore Ellie Forster.

“Mine is hot pink and I absolutely love it because I think so many winter clothes are black or dark grey,” Forster said. “I love being able to find winter pieces that are summer or spring colors instead of the grey, overcast, snowy vibe.”

Forster’s long, hot pink jacket was a Super Puff from Aritzia, which is known for having some of the best quality and warmest winter coats out there.

For a sportier look, The North Face has great options such as this retro two-toned jacket.

Stockings and Tights

While trending fashions go in and out of style, Tumblr 2014 American Apparel fashion is forever. A staple of this iconic era includes black tights and mini skirts (and bonus points if it’s a tennis skirt.) The tights are what really make the look, however.

Black tights are a staple piece to have in any stylish arsenal — both nylons and opaque tights for those colder months.

To add spice to a look, Forster thinks “crazy patterned tights” are great stockings for stocking stuffers.

“I love the idea of wearing tall, knee-high boots with shorts or a little mini skirt and then crazy tights,” Forster said.

Docs and Uggs

Whether trudging through snow or walking on icy streets, a sturdy pair of boots are the way to go.

“Doc Martens are a slimmer boot that won’t take up too much space but can get you through the snow, especially with the cold weather in Chicago,” junior Abby Yoder said.

Doc Martens have been consistently on-trend for the last few years, and can be paired with anything, such as jeans and a hoodie or a dress and tights. Platform Docs can be a chic look that also adds height, according to Yoder.

Trends tend to come and go in a cycle of about 10 years, and Uggs have made their triumphant reappearance in celebrity street style photos once again.

Instead of going for tall Uggs or knit style this year, shorter booties or loafer-style Uggs are in this year. An alternative option would be these platform zipper Uggs.

Winter Skincare

Christmas in Chicago is beautiful but the brutal weather calls for a solid skincare routine.

Junior Yesinia Rivera said she wanted the La Roche-Posay moisturizer for Christmas this year.

“I’ve heard lots of good things about this brand because of the ingredients and formula they use,” Rivera said. “I have their make-up remover liquid and it works great. I don’t break out as much anymore.”

Another high-quality moisturizer that’s more heavy duty for winter — but won’t break the bank — is the $15 Inkey List Peptide Moisturizer. For a relaxing night in, face masks are the way to go and sleep-on masks are an amazing way to add extra moisture to dried out skin. The Laneige Water Sleeping Mask and Youth to the People Superberry are alternative options out there for sleeping masks.

Where to Buy

Specific items such as a jacket from The North Face or a pair of Uggs require a trip to a department store like Nordstrom or Macy’s, and the skincare items listed above can be found at Sephora or Ulta.

Shopping at local small businesses and boutiques can be a fun alternative to department store chaos. They also tend to offer more unique clothing pieces and a plethora of gift options great for the holidays.
