Dance team searching for new coach

The dance team is beginning the school year with Kaneidra Everson standing in as interim coach. The position was vacated when Elyse Skalka left the job shortly after tryouts in August. The Athletic Department is currently searching for a permanent dance coach.

The Phoenix reached out to both Skalka and the Athletic Department, neither of whom commented on Skalka’s leaving. Members of the dance team were also unavailable for comment on the coach’s leaving or the hiring process. However, one dancer did say that the team will most likely have a new coach this week.

Everson, a Loyola alum and former member of Loyola’s dance team before joining the coaching staff, said the team is taking the changes “in stride.”

Ideally the candidate would have a background of coaching at the high school or college level and knowledge of the Loyola team, according to Everson

“We’re looking for someone who understands we have established ourselves as a credible dance program,” she said.

The Athletic Department is not interested in completely changing the program, but hiring someone who will improve and build on the routines and the atmosphere the team has already established, according to Everson.

The team’s next performance will be at the men’s soccer game against Bradley University on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Loyola Soccer Park on Hoyne Avenue and Devon Avenue.
