The Phoenix staff took home 13 awards at the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) Feb. 20.
The Phoenix competed in the non-daily category with a student enrollment of more than 4,000 students. Content from December 2014 to December 2015 was judged for the competition.
The Phoenix took home third place in the general excellence category, second place in the special supplement category and honorable mention for its online news site. Each of these awards were judged in the “open” category, which included all participating Illinois schools, regardless of enrollment numbers.
Ten submissions judged in the non-daily category for schools with an enrollment greater than 4,000 students also received honors Saturday.
Photography and Design Editor Ellen Bauch took home first and third place in the feature photo category. News Editor Grace Runkel earned third place in the general news photo category, and contributor Dante Violette placed second in the breaking news photo category.
Sports Editor Nader Issa placed second in the sports news category and Assistant News Editor Rory Dayton took home second in the in-depth reporting category.
Issa earned first place in the sports column category, Opinion Editor Morgan Christian earned honorable mention in the column writing category and The Phoenix staff took home an honorable mention for a staff editorial.
Closer Look Editor Erin Kelley earned honorable mention in the feature writing category.
