Honeybear Cafe Offers a Refreshing Take on Classic Diner-Style Breakfast

Zack Miller | The PhoenixThe Honeybear Cafe serves the 2x2x2 and coffee as a brunch option and the Southwest burger and fries on the lunch menu.

Situated in the middle of Rogers Park at the intersection of North Clark Street and Greenleaf Avenue is a new restaurant called Honeybear Cafe (7036 N. Clark St.). The restaurant boasts a whimsical interior and tasty food that fits a college student’s budget.

Stepping into the restaurant, the familiar smell of a diner is met with a colorful, contemporary interior. Neon letters reading “Eat Well Live Well” are inscribed in a hedge-covered wall behind the register. The cafe’s atmosphere is likened to a mix of a classic diner setting and a stylish, modern restaurant.

Honeybear Cafe offers a 20 percent discount to everyone who presents a Loyola ID.

The restaurant’s lengthy menu features classic diner choices. The brunch menu includes breakfast fare such as skillets, pancakes and breakfast sandwiches. The lunch menu is available after 11 a.m. and includes burgers, sandwiches and salads.

The 2x2x2 brunch dish came with two pancakes, two eggs and two pieces of bacon or sausage.

Dusted with powdered sugar, the pancakes came out piping hot and fresh. Each cake was golden brown and had just the right amount of fluff in order to absorb heaps of maple syrup.

Over easy eggs and sausage links sat alongside the pancakes. The sausage links are about double the size of standard restaurant sausage links. The order also came with four sausage links — two more than expected. They added a savory component to an otherwise sweet dish.

Off the lunch menu, the Southwest burger substitutes a beef patty with chorizo, putting a spin on a traditional burger. The buns were nicely crisped and buttery.

The chorizo had a nice spice, adding a real kick to the dish. The burger is topped with melted American cheese, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos and, for an extra cost, avocado. The $2 cost of the avocado is worth it to further the Southwestern flare. Served on the side of the burger, the crispy and salty classic steak fries complemented the dish nicely.

Most meals cost less than $12 — the 2x2x2 is $9 and the Southwest burger is $12. Honeybear Cafe is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
