The Phoenix staff came away from the Illinois College Press Association’s annual convention Feb. 19-20 with 25 awards and honors, including second place in the sweepstakes category which is calculated with the total points earned in other awards.
Editors submitted content published between December 2019 and November 2020 for consideration in the competition, which is judged by professional journalists throughout the country. The Phoenix competed in the non-daily category with a student enrollment of more than 4,000.
In 2019, The Phoenix came in first place for general excellence, but this year the staff came in second place in the sweepstakes category, which replaced general excellence and was calculated with the cumulative total of points from the other awards. The Columbia Chronicle from Columbia College Chicago earned first place in the sweepstakes category. At the 2019 awards, The Phoenix staff came away with 18 awards and honors.
