Loyola Women’s Volleyball Brings Home Two MVC All-Freshman Awards

Neil Beran | The PhoenixThe Loyola women's volleyball team cheers after scoring a point last season.

Two first-years on the Loyola women’s volleyball team — outside hitter Emily Banitt and libero Grace Hinchman — were named to the 2020-21 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Freshman team.

This is the second consecutive season two Ramblers have been named to the team after sophomores outside hitter Addie Barnes and middle hitter Taylor Venuto received the award last year.

Banitt began her career at Loyola on a hot streak, tallying a double-double in each of the first three matches of the season. She went on to boast a team-best nine double-doubles as well as 10 matches of double-figure kills. The River Falls, Wis. native averages 2.67 kills and 3.12 digs per set, ranking second-best on the team for both.

Hinchman ranks No. 3 in the MVC, No. 18 in the nation and No. 3 among NCAA Division I first-years with an average of 5.48 digs per set. She tallied 20 or more digs in 12 matches during the 2020-21 season and made a season-best 38 against University of Evansville Feb. 15 — the second-highest in program history after former Rambler Maddy Moser tallied 40 during a match in 2019.

The Ramblers were awarded the No. 6 seed in the upcoming MVC tournament and will play their quarterfinal game against No. 3-seeded Missouri State University April 1 in Normal, Ill.. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
