The Loyola Phoenix was named runner up for the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence award for the best overall student newspaper.
The Columbia Daily Spectator, the student newspaper at Columbia University in New York, earned best overall student newspaper. The honor came after The Phoenix earned several regional SPJ honors back in April, including best overall newspaper, as well as 25 awards from the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) back in February, The Phoenix reported.
The SPJ is an advocacy organization that issues guidance for journalists, advocates on their behalf and gives out awards for journalism.
In 2015, SPJ named The Phoenix the top non-daily student newspaper in the country, The Phoenix reported.
