BREAKING: Loyola Announces Move to Atlantic 10 Conference

Zack Miller | The PhoenixLoyola will join the Atlantic 10 Conference for the 2022-23 season.

Loyola will be leaving the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) and joining the Atlantic 10 (A-10) Conference for the 2022-2023 season, according to an A-10 press release.

The move marks the second conference change for Loyola in eight years, after the university left the Horizon League in 2013.

The Ramblers will be the 15th university in the conference and the fourth Jesuit school — joining Saint Louis University, St. Joseph’s University and Fordham University.

Loyola President Dr. Jo Ann Rooney said the move set Loyola up for “greater success both athletically and academically.”

“I am excited to announce that Loyola University Chicago will be joining the Atlantic 10 Conference beginning in the 2022-23 academic year,” Rooney said in a statement. “The A-10 is widely regarded as one of the top conferences in the country for its success in competition and in the classroom.”

The conference has averaged 3.4 men’s basketball and 1.7 women’s basketball NCAA Tournament bids per year over the last decade. The MVC currently has just three teams in the top 100 of the KenPom ranking system — Loyola being the highest ranked of them at 32 — while the A-10 has six.

“I am honored to welcome Loyola University Chicago to the Atlantic 10 Conference, and we look forward to working closely with an exceptional group of administrators, coaches and student-athletes,” Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade said in a statement. “Loyola’s commitment to the high-level scholastic achievement of all of its students, coupled with its excellent athletic profile, from success in basketball, soccer and volleyball to outstanding facilities and resources, is a perfect fit for the A-10.”

MVC Commissioner Jeff Jackson wished Loyola well in the future. The conference will welcome Belmont University for the 2022-2023, with rumors that Murray State will also be joining next season.

“In its 115 year history, the Missouri Valley Conference has undergone many changes in membership,” Jackson said in a statement on Twitter. “The Valley will continue to remain proactive and progressive as we navigate the current collegiate environment. Loyola Chicago has been a valued member of the Missouri Valley Conference, and we wish Loyola all the best as it begins its next chapter.”
