A fire burned through two Edgewater businesses before 4 a.m. Tuesday morning before the Chicago Fire Department halted the spread to second floor apartments. No one was injured in the fire and both businesses currently have boards on their storefronts.

The two damaged businesses were Rewired Pizza Cafe & Bar and Thorndale Mart. Both lie next to the Thorndale Red Line station around five blocks from Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus.

Firefighters stopped the fire from spreading further around 4 a.m. July 18. CFD attributed the containment of the fire to aggressive action from the first groups of firefighters to arrive on scene, according to Chicago Fire Media, the official CFD Twitter account.

CFD left the area at around 5 a.m. The Office of Fire Investigation was looking into the fire at the time, according to Chicago Fire Media. The fire is still under investigation as of around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, CFD told The Phoenix.

Daniel Barat, owner of Rewired, told The Phoenix via email he’s currently attempting to find alternative work for his employees and communicating with his insurance broker.

Thorndale Mart didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
