A new scholarship is being offered to students of Arrupe College beginning this fall thanks to a $5 million grant from the Pritzker Traubert Foundation.
Loyola announced a new scholarship opportunity to support first generation Arrupe College students Sept.11, following a $5 million donation from the Pritzker Traubert Foundation.
Starting this fall, first-gen Arrupe graduates can apply for a bachelor’s degree at Loyola that will leave them with little to no debt.
Arrupe College, Loyola’s school for two-year associate degrees, will consider factors like students’ academic excellence and financial need when selecting scholarship recipients.
By granting this opportunity to Arrupe graduates, the Pritzker Traubert foundation is ensuring success for aspiring students with financial struggles and allowing students from diverse backgrounds to persevere, Arrupe Dean Rev. Martin Connell, S.J., said.
The Pritzker Traubert Foundation’s purpose for its gift is reflected in Loyola’s own mission, Connell said. He said he believes the scholarship gift goes beyond the check, and will leave a “lasting legacy” for generations of Loyola students.
The Chairman of the Pritzker Traubert Foundation and a member of Loyola’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Bryan Traubert endorsed the scholarship, according to the Sept. 11 press release.
“Loyola is a leader in successful approaches to expanding access for students facing high barriers to higher education,” Traubert said in the release. “I am confident that our investment in Loyola and its students will provide needed support and access to an excellent education and strong careers. We believe that this opportunity will benefit the students, their families and the region for generations.”
Connell said the grant will cover the Pritzker Traubert Scholars through an endowment that will grant generations of Arrupe graduates the opportunity to build on the Loyola legacy by being not only a gift to the university, but a permanent one at that.
“Because it is endowed, the gift generates income in perpetuity, meaning that it will continue to support students for generations to come,” Connell said.
Instituting the title of Pritzker Traubert Scholars, the award particularly helps first generation students with high financial need. Connell said the scholarship plays an integral role for lower income students or students from marginalized backgrounds.
“Secondly, the gift aligns with Loyola’s mission of promoting social justice, education for all and the formation of leaders committed to serving others,” Connell said.
Connell said the scholarship is a testament to Loyola’s goal towards supporting students and, as a result, the future of the community as a whole.
