It isn’t known as of Oct. 29 if any victims were Loyola students. The incident occurred approximately 0.2 miles from the Lake Shore Campus and about 400 feet from The Morgan at Loyola Station, an apartment building owned and operated by the university.
Three men, including a 24-year-old male, a 28-year-old male and a male of unknown age were walking on West Loyola Avenue when they were approached by an unknown male offender, according to CPD. The offender began a verbal altercation before escalating the situation and pulling out a firearm.
The offender fired shots at all three victims, hitting the 24-year-old male in the arm and causing a laceration to the 28-year-old male’s right hand. The third male victim wasn’t injured, according to CPD.
After authorities were notified of the situation, the administration sent a Loyola Alert to members of the university community around 2:20 p.m. when the crime first occurred and then again at about 2:35 p.m. when the situation had been resolved.
The university didn’t immediately respond to The Phoenix’s requests for comment.
The two injured victims were transported to St. Francis Hospital in non-critical condition while the third victim declined medical attention, according to CPD.
Shortly following the arrival of authorities on the scene, the suspect was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered in the 6400 block of North Sheridan Road. CPD said the suspect had a valid Firearm Owners Identification Card and Concealed Carry License.
Employees of Insomnia Cookies at 6470 N. Sheridan Rd. closed the store and posted signs in their windows the morning after the incident which read “FORCED TO work after an active shooting! We rendered aid to victims yet corporate refuses to put us first!”
No employees of the Insomnia Cookies location could be immediately reached for comment.
The investigation is still ongoing as of Oct. 29, according to CPD.
