Rivers & Roads Cafe, a national parks-themed coffee and pastry shop located 0.2 miles away from The Lake Shore Campus at 1259 W. Devon Ave., was broken into at 4:25 a.m. Jan. 9.
The glass window of the front door was smashed and money was stolen from the cash register, according to Janine Ramirez-Waskowski, a co-owner of the cafe.
“We weren’t hit too hard,” Ramirez-Waskowski said. “But it’s unfortunate and obviously disheartening.”
Ramirez-Waskowski said the door was able to be replaced. The store was able to operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 9, a few hours past normal hours, according to the store’s Instagram post about the break-in.
“We have gotten everything cleaned up and are going to try to make the best of today,” the caption read.
Ramirez-Waskowksi said business gets slower when nearby university students are out of town for winter break. Loyola’s regular school year resumed Jan. 13.
“A big part of our clientele is Loyola and Northwestern students,” Ramirez-Waskowski said.
Ramirez-Waskowski said two nearby businesses were also broken into around the same time, but didn’t identify them by name. The Chicago Police Department is continuing to investigate, according to ABC7.
The owners, Janine Ramirez-Waskowski and Mike Waskowski, opened the cafe in 2021, according to the business website.
Ramirez-Waskowski said she filed a police report. The Phoenix reached CPD but wasn’t provided a copy of the report.
