Loyola took to the track for the first time this new year Jan. 18 when they headed to Iowa City, Iowa for the Hawkeye Invitational.

Despite the competition taking place across Friday and Saturday, the Ramblers only participated in Saturday’s events where they found themselves the victors of four different contests.

Loyola’s first win of the day came from graduate James Lawrence, who captured the fastest mile of the day with a time of 4:04.52. His time was 12.71 seconds faster than his previous best and only .38 seconds faster than second-place finisher Mohamed Dahmouch, a first-year from Iowa Central Community College.

Second-year Nate Boutin set a new personal record as the second Rambler to cross the finish line, just missing the podium in fourth at 4:07.86. Second-year Cael Mulholland and third-year Jake Phillips were next in line as they finished back to back in ninth and 10th with times of 4:15.43 and 4:16.11.

Nearly 10 seconds later, second-year Aidan Collins finished in 17th with a personal best of 4:254.70. The last runner to cross the line for Loyola was third-year Kyle Knutson, who came in 21st with a 4:35.74.

Immediately following the men’s mile was the women’s mile. Loyola found themselves atop the podium once more as graduate Emma Watcke won the race by over two seconds with a time of 4:47.02.

The only other Rambler to finish in the top 10 was third-year Roisin Treacy, who finished in sixth and set a personal best at 4:51.45. Third-year Ali Gilooly was next for Loyola in 18th at 5:04.05.

Outside the top 20 were second-year Eileen Seebon in 21st with 5:05.72, fourth-year Aiden Grasse in 26th with 5:11.92 and second-year Priscilla Ravera in 32nd at 5:25.02.

The next race for the Ramblers was the women’s 800m, where two Ramblers set personal records. Fourth-year Alessandra Rodriguez finished in second at 2:12.10, and second-year Jo Collins finished seventh with a time of 2:24.43.

The men’s and women’s 3000m were the final events of the day for Loyola.

On the men’s side, fourth-years Samuel Field and Gabe Smit finished first and second, only .15 seconds apart as Field captured the crown with a time of 8:09.41.

The next Ramblers to finish were first-year Izak Bibile and third-year Woody Jerome, coming in 13th and 14th with times of 8:35.72 and 8:37.23. Rounding out the top 20 was fourth-year Fionn Harrington in 17th at 8:51.69 and third-year Gabe Ryan in 20th at 9:20.34.

Two of Loyola’s racers, fourth-year Francois Guilhot and second-year Trent Anderson, didn’t complete the race.

The women’s team had three racers finish the 3k, with fourth-year Grace Jostock leading the pack in eighth place at 9:59.02. Fourth-year Alex Morris and first-year Charlotte Wilson came in 15th and 20th with times of 10:21.49 and 11:34.42.
