Here at The Phoenix, we’re ready to brave the cold and get back to exploring Chicago after a much needed winter break.
This week, do your part to take care of the environment by attending a beach stewardship day or the School of Environmental Sustainability Clothing swap.
Alternatively, get in tune with your body at a yoga meditation or with your intellectual side at Beard & Belly’s trivia night.
Beach Stewardship: Jan. 26
The Edgewater Environmental Coalition hosts beach stewardship days on the last Sunday of every month to clean up local beaches. Kathy Osterman Beach in the 48th Ward will host a cleanup Jan. 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Volunteers can sign up for the email list for EEC news and future stewardship opportunities.
Chair Yoga Meditations: Jan. 26
Unity Chicago, a non-denominational spiritual church, is hosting chair yoga and meditation sessions on several Sundays this year, beginning with this Sunday, Jan. 26, according to their website. The event will last from 10 to 11 a.m. and will be led by Unity Prayer Chaplain Linda Tinson.
During these one-hour sessions, participants will explore various meditation techniques for improving focus and reducing stress while Tinson leads several chair yoga exercises — low-impact and quick exercise for boosting health, according to the event page on the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce website.
Trivia at Beard & Belly: Jan. 27
Less than a half mile away from The Lake Shore Campus, Edgewater restaurants Beard & Belly and Honeypie Bake Shop are hosting trivia this Monday, Jan. 27. Guaranteed by the restaurant to be the best Monday in January, the Chicago-based entertainment business Stewpendous Productions will preside over the free event, lasting from 8 to 10 p.m..
SES Clothing Swap: Jan. 23
Take the endlessly growing pile of clothes you never wear to the School of Environmental Science building this Thursday, Jan. 23 for a clothing swap. From 7 to 8 p.m. in SES 110, exchange and pass on your clean clothes with the incredible fits of your classmates.
Wednesday in Stitches: Jan. 22
Chicago Public Library Rogers Park, located at 6907 N. Clark St., will host local knitters and crocheters 6 p.m. Jan. 22. No previous experience is necessary.
Prospective attendees should bring their own needles and yarn for this hour and a half long event and will have the chance to show off their own work or learn from other knitters in their neighborhood.
Lilli Malone, a senior, is the Editor-in-Chief of The Phoenix and has written for the paper since the first week of her freshman year.
