How We’re Funded
The Loyola Phoenix is the official student newspaper of Loyola University Chicago, established in 1969. While we’re entirely editorially independent from the university, we’re financially dependent on them for everything from paying our staff to printing each week. Outside our annually allotted budget, we rely on donations from our generous readers to fund our operation.
About Our Work
Each week, The Phoenix writers and editors produce an average of about 40 articles across four sections — news, opinion, arts and sports. Our photo section provides additional content for articles as well as standalone photo essays while the engagement section produces posts for our Instagram, X and TikTok to reach a wider audience.
The Phoenix prints an average of 1,500 copies of the paper Wednesday of each week, which are distributed across Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus and Water Tower Campus. Additionally, we publish to our website, which receives more than 40,000 visitors each month.
In total, our official staff consists of 15 editors and more than 150 volunteer writers and photographers. Everybody on our staff — from our website developer and business manager to our editor-in-chief and managing editor — are students of Loyola.
How to Contribute
Any monetary contributions to The Phoenix are incredibly appreciated, and go directly toward funding the work we do in serving the Loyola and Rogers Park communities with high quality, timely news. If you are interested in making a donation, please follow the steps below.
1 ) Visit the Loyola University Chicago donation portal here.
2 ) Under “Gift Amount,” select your donation amount.
2 ) Under “Direct Your Gift,” select “Show More +.”
3 ) After clicking “Show More +,” scroll down and select the dropdown labeled “School of Communication.” Underneath the dropdown, check the checkbox next to “The Phoenix – Loyola’s Student Newspaper.”
4 ) Scroll all the way to the bottom of this pop-up and click “Save” to make sure your selection is recorded. If successful, you will see a summary of your donation at the bottom, titled “Giving Summary.”
5 ) Follow the rest of the prompts to provide billing information, payment information and donation confirmation.
