Six dorms on Mertz Hall’s seventh floor flooded Dec. 6 after a window was left open in a room where the heat was turned off.
Kana Henning, vice president for Facilities and Campus Management, said the flooding damaged multiple students’ rooms.
“The fan coil unit beneath the window froze and burst, causing flooding to approximately six units,” Henning wrote in an email to The Phoenix.
Henning urged students to take preventive measures to avoid further disruptions, especially while they’re out of the dorms during winter break.
“We are pleading with all residential students to pay attention to messages sent by Residence Life,” Henning wrote in an email to The Phoenix. “Take note of the window clings that remind students to keep their windows closed during extreme cold temperatures.”
For Facilities to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies, they’re allowed to enter students’ rooms without notice, according to Henning.
“We are following our standard protocols for a flooding response to remediate the water impacted materials, dry the space, and restore it to safe conditions,” Henning wrote in an email to The Phoenix.
Mertz Hall experienced flooding for similar reasons in December 2022, The Phoenix previously reported.
