Blue Skies Ahead: Headline Reenactment, Art Workshop and “Family” Improv

Even though St. Patrick’s Day — arguably the biggest holiday of the year in Chicago — has come to a close, the end of winter is still reason enough to celebrate. 

This week, check out a free art workshop at the Sulzer Regional Library for a chance to be featured in a community exhibition, or watch an improv show at the iO Theater. 

Protection Magic for City Folk: March 19

Create your own magical talisman for protection on the CTA. Just off of the Red Line Morse stop, Malliway Bros. Spells, Charms and Potions, located at 1407 W. Morse Ave., hosts many magical craft events every month. Tickets are $25 for this two-hour event, beginning at 7:30 p.m. March 19.

Free Art Workshop: March 22

Paint your way to personal wellness 2 to 4 p.m. March 22 at the Sulzer Regional Library in Lincoln Square with a free art workshop led by professionals. Select pieces will be included in an April community exhibition.

The Paper Machete “Live Magazine” Enactment: March 22

These weekly “live magazine” performances begin March 22 at The Green Mill in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Journalists, actors, comedians and musicians will transform news headlines of the day into witty entertainment. Admission is free.

Third Annual Alice Gerstenberg Play Festival: March 19

Lights, camera, action — the third annual Alice Gerstenberg Play Festival will take place March 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. After grabbing a bite to eat at one of Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus dining halls, consider taking a three-minute stroll in the setting sun to Berger (Albert Park), located at 6205 N. Sheridan Rd.

“Family” Improv Show: March 19

Do you have issues with your family? This March 19 improv performance will have you on the edge of your seat from 9 to 10:30 p.m. as audience members around you — and possibly you — are used as inspiration for acting out entertaining stories of family dysfunction. Just 30 minutes down the Red Line to the North/Clybourn stop, the iO Theater near Old Town has tickets listed at $10.

“Level Up: Writers and Gamers” Exhibition: March 20

The American Writers Museum, located at 180 N. Michigan Ave. near the Water Tower Campus, will take you on an adventure through role-playing history and cyberspace with this March 20 exhibition. For starting prices of $10, attendees can learn how games define our culture.
