Blue Skies Ahead: World Music Festival, Oktoberfest, Pilates in the Park

A warm end to the month of September brings unique events to Loyola and its community.

The final week of September brings warm weather and artistically and physically enriching activities. Swing by the North Side this week for toning exercises at Pink Pilates two blocks away from the Lake Shore Campus and a chilling production of Macbeth in Lincoln Square.

Down the Red Line, the Uptown School of Folk Music is hosting world music and those interested in Arabic calligraphy and henna can go down to the Motherland Cafe’s workshop. Find fresh produce at Glenwood’s Sunday Market or delve into the erotic with The Leather Archives and Museum’s kinky rummage sale.

Glenwood Sunday Market: Sept. 21

The 16th year of the Glenwood Sunday Market will take place on the west side of Glenwood Avenue next to the Morse station. Every Sunday until Oct. 26, local vendors and farmers will be selling a range of products from fruits and vegetables to meats and cheeses. 

Kinky Rummage sale at Leather Archives and Museum: Sept. 26-27

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Visit the Kinky Rummage sale at the Leather Archives and Museum to buy used leather, rubber, toys and more. First-pick shopping opens to museum members Friday at 5 p.m. and to the general public at 6 p.m. 

Arabic Calligraphy & Inspired Henna workshop/Social: Sept. 27

The Motherland Cafe is hosting a workshop for those looking to practice Arabic calligraphy and henna. From 3-6:30 p.m., participants can learn about the art of Arabic writing and practice creating their own unique designs. 

Pop Up Pilates at Loyola Park: Sept. 25

The Chicago Parks District is hosting a Paint the Parks Pink Pilates class, open to people of any skill level. Join others in an evening of movement and mindfulness while supporting the fight against breast cancer. 

World Music Fest at Uptown School of Folk Music: Oct. 1

The Uptown School of Folk Music is hosting Nidia Góngora and Bomberxs D’Cora. Góngora is a Colombian folk singer specializing in traditional Pacific music, who was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2019. 

Bomberxs D’Cora is a collective of bomba practitioners founded by Ivelisse Diaz in 2009. The event is free, and you can reserve a spot on the Uptown School of Folk Music’s website.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth At River Park: Sept. 20
The Shakespeare Blood Oath traveling players will be performing their “madcap” interpretation of Macbeth along the river. There will be a bonfire and attendants are welcome to bring their own marshmallows.
