First-year Reese Kite helped the Ramblers fly into second in their fall finale.
The Loyola women’s golf team closed their fall season at the Bronco Fall Classic hosted by Western Michigan University, where they finished in third with a total of 929 (309-307-313) strokes.
Head coach Brandy Johnston discussed the team’s performance at the tournament.
“The conditions were incredibly tough, but everyone kept a good attitude all day,” Johnston said. “We played with a lot of grit, and finished strong, which was great to see.”
Both Dayton University (302-310-314) and Western Michigan University (301-302-323) tied for the top spot with a total of 926. Individually, Dayton’s third-year Kylee Heidemann took first place with a 219 (73-73-73).
For the Ramblers, first-year Reese Kite landed in a tie for second place with a score of 225 (73-76-76). This marks Kite’s first top 10 and top 5 appearance in her collegiate career. Her first round score of 73 marks Kite’s career-best score.
Third-year Cassie Psuik (79-73-81) landed in a tie for ninth with second-year Madison Haugen (78-78-77), with a total of 233. Their top 10 finish marks Psuik’s second of the season and Haugen’s first of her collegiate career.
Finishing in a tie for 25th, second-year Grace Hui recorded 241 (81-81-79) strokes. Her three birdies in her final round marked a high for Hui in the tournament.
First-year Teagan Connors finished the tournament with 246 (79-80-87) in a tie for 29th place. A total of seven bogeys and three double-bogeys led to a final round score of 15-over par.
Johnston said the whole team has a reason to be proud of this season.
“Despite losing two impactful players to graduation last spring, our fall scoring average was nearly three strokes better this fall as compared to last,” Johnston said. “We had three players post rounds under par, several top-10 individual finishes, and the team posted a score out of four-over par at the Murray State Invite, which ranks fourth in school history.”
As the team looks to the spring season, the team’s success will be determined by their work moving forward and not their performance from the fall, according to Johnston.
The Ramblers tee off their spring season Feb. 2-3 for the Texas State Invitational in New Braunfels,Texas.
