Loyola’s cross country teams trekked westward to Columbia, Mo. for the Missouri Pre-National Invite Oct. 17 for their final tune up before the Atlantic 10 (A10) championships. The men’s team turned in a fifth-place performance highlighted by graduate William Sinclair, and fourth-year Roisin Treacy led the women’s team to 21st in the 38 team field.
Following Loyola men’s cross country being ranked 30th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll for the first time. They faced a tough field, highlighted by three fellow ranked opponents in No. 19 University of Missouri , No. 22 University of Arkansas and No. 24 University of Mississippi.
Sinclair followed up on his A10 Performer of the Week performance by leading the men’s team again, finishing 10th out of 268, with a time of 23:22.6. Just over half a minute behind him was third-year Jake Phillips in 31st clocking in at 23:54.4.
Right on his tail was graduate Jason Clayton who crossed the finish line 48th at 24:04.3. Only a second behind him was fourth-year Yusuf Baig in 49th at 24:05.1. Rounding out the scoring for the Ramblers was graduate Hayden Healey timing in at 24:14.7, earning him 59th.
Loyola’s fivesome scored a total of 192 points, placing them fifth in the event and placing above Arkansas. The University of Georgia finished first as a team with 119 points, helping them move from unranked to No. 20 in this week’s USTFCCCA poll.
The next Rambler to finish the race was third-year Nate Boutin in 78th with a time of 24:26.3. Graduate Rodolfo Sanchez was 10 spots back of him in 88th, timing in at 24:31.5. The final Rambler to crack the top 100 was third-year Cael Mulholland in 95th at 24:37.5.
Rounding out the day for the Ramblers was second-year Izak Bibile in 122nd with a time of 24:58.3, fourth-year Colby Revord in 143rd at 25:09.4 and third-year Woody Jerome closing the pack in 206th clocking in at 25:47.6.
The women’s team faced an even tougher field consisting of six ranked opponents, highlighted by No.1 Brigham Young University taking first place with only 25 total points, with their five best runners all finishing in the top eight.
Loyola found themselves finishing 21st in the treacherous field with their performance highlighted by fourth-year Roisin Treacy earning a new personal best with a time of 20:18.2 and a 29th place finish that won her A10 Performer of the Week honors.
The next Rambler didn’t cross for nearly a minute until third-year Bárbara Neiva crossed in 97th timing in at 21:03.7 for a new personal best. Graduate Bethany Graham and third-year Eileen Seebon crossed consecutively in 156th and 157th with times of 21:34.8 and 21:35.0.
Closing out Loyola’s top five was third-year Angy Salado Fernandez in 170th at 21:41.3. Outside the top 200 was second-year Maggie Powers in 271st, clocking a time of 22:31.4. Graduate Kayla Schmidt finished with a time of 22:42.0, good for 283rd. Ending the Ramblers’ day was third-year Priscilla Ravera at 22:49.9, finishing 292nd out of 339.
Loyola races next in the Atlantic 10 championships Saturday Nov. 1, in Dayton, Ohio, as the women’s team attempts to win their fourth straight A10 title and the men’s team goes for their third in four years.
