Loyola women’s volleyball achieved their sixth conference win against Duquesne University Oct. 11 in Gentile Arena. Second-year outside hitter Kaitlyn Burke helped lead the team with 12 kills, and Duquesne’s fourth-year middle blocker Ariel Helm tallied nine kills.
Third-year middle blocker Avary DeBlieck and Burke started the first set alternating blocks and kills, giving the Ramblers a 4-0 lead.
Three kills from the Dukes’ fourth-year outside hitter Carsyn Henschen, second-year middle blocker Mirabella Iriarte and second-year outside hitter Emersen Schrom, an ace from fourth-year outside hitter Hanna Wilson and two errors from Loyola gave Duquesne a 6-4 lead.
Burke and DeBlieck and Henschen and Schrom alternated kills, keeping the game close and the Dukes in the lead at 8-7.
After an error from each team, Schrom and Duquesne’s first-year outside hitter Karli Jordan added a kill for the Dukes. First-year defensive specialist Leyna Nguyen added a kill and an ace for the Ramblers while third-year setter Emma Henry tallied another kill.
Two errors from the Dukes gave the Ramblers a 15-12 lead but were offset by two kills from Schrom and one from Helm. Three errors from the Ramblers switched the lead to the Dukes with a score of 18-17.
Back-to-back kills from fourth-year middle blocker Ann Marie Remmes brought the Ramblers up one point. The lead shifted back to the Dukes after an error from the Ramblers and a kill from Helm for a score of 20-19.
Two more kills by second-year outside hitter Claire Van Den Herik and Remmes brought the Ramblers to the lead again, but the set stayed close until the Ramblers won after a final point from a block assist from Burke and DeBlieck with a final score of 25-23.
A block assist by DeBlieck and first-year middle blocker Karli Molnau started the second set. After a kill by Remmes and an ace by second-year libero Sam Falk, the Ramblers gained a 4-1 lead.
Kills were swapped by Burke and Iriarte. Nguyen and Molnau added kills for the Ramblers while Schrom and Duquense’s third-year right side hitter Kylie Griffin added two for the Dukes.
Henry had two aces, and Burke added two kills, bringing the Ramblers to a 13-6 lead. Henschen tallied a kill for the Dukes but was followed by kills from Burke and Van Den Herik.

Errors by the Ramblers offered the Dukes some points, but Molnau tallied two kills, bringing the Ramblers to a 20-10 lead. Iriarte added a kill to the Dukes’ board.
DeBlieck tallied two kills and had a solo block to help the Ramblers end the second set with a win at 25-15.
The third set started with kills for the Dukes by Henschen, Helm and Schrom. Block assists by Burke, DeBlieck, Nguyen and Remmes offered points for the Ramblers. A kill from Remmes brought Loyola to a 4-3 lead.
Kills by third-year setter Chloe Wilmot and Iriarte as well as two block assists brought the score back to the Dukes.
Molnau and Schrom exchanged kills, as did Burke and Helm. After an ace from Burke, three errors from the Dukes gave the Ramblers a 17-10 lead.
The Ramblers sustained the lead with kills from Van Den Herik, Remmes, Burke and Monlau, bringing the score to 22-13.
Kills from Schrom, Henschen and Helm tightened the score to 23-18. Burke tallied two kills to seal the Ramblers’ win 25-20.
The game supported Breast Cancer Awareness and Loyola alumni. Head coach Amanda Berkely said they always want to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness, and it was really special to have the alumni back.
“It was really special to have alumni back,” said Berkley. “And Breast Cancer Awareness — we always want to highlight that. We have one person that has beaten it twice, Kaitlyn Burke’s mom, so it’s pretty impressive to have her back here.”
The Ramblers’ next take the court on the road Oct. 17 against Davidson College at 6 p.m. in John M. Belk Arena, opening a two-game series.
