Lights. Camera. “brat.”
On Jan. 30, club classic pop superstar Charli xcx celebrated a limited release of “The Moment” — her highly anticipated mockumentary film about the mainstream music scene.
“The Moment” is inspired by the singer’s two-year rollercoaster of intense, sweaty success following the June 2024 release of her culture-shifting album “brat.” The story is a fictional depiction of the “brat” era in the form of an amateur documentary, serving as a sort of “what-if” retelling of the “SWEAT Arena Tour,” emphasizing the taxing training, potential errors and inevitable showgirl trauma that may arise during a performer’s first arena tour.
Here’s a rundown of everything viewers should know before tuning into the satirical adventure.
Following the success of “brat,” the autotuned, electronic singer dominated the charts with Grammy-winning singles like “Von Dutch” and viral TikTok bops like “Apple” and “360.” The diva’s popularity further skyrocketed with the release of the cleverly curated October 2024 record “brat and it’s completely different but also still brat,” which featured various artists on remixed tracks.

Building off her album’s popularity, the artist launched into the global sensation known as the “SWEAT Arena Tour,” where she and Australian singer Troye Sivan performed at iconic venues like Chicago’s United Center and New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
The “party 4 u” singer pushed on to feature in notable projects like Prime Video’s “Overcompensating” and the upcoming film “Wuthering Heights,” which she soundtracked. The moment couldn’t be better for Charli to take on the big screen with a film based on her original idea, but the premise tends to confuse even the most die-hard Charli fans.
The movie boasts comedy darlings like Rish Shah (Overcompensating, Do Revenge), Kate Berlant (Don’t Worry Darling, Sorry to Bother You) and Jamie Demetriou (Cruella, Roses) and unexpected additions like Kylie Jenner, who represent fictional versions of Charli’s crew members, spanning from unrealistic pyrotechnicians to overbearing managers and wide-eyed reporters.
Charli also acts in the film, playing a heightened persona rather than a true-to-life version of herself. The embellished performance serves to promote a pseudo, behind-the-scenes look at the pop singer’s touring experience.
Before making any rash ticket purchases, audiences should consider the “365” singer’s aesthetic before heading to the big screen. Photosensitive viewers should note strobe-lighting effects aren’t out of the question and play a significant role in the film’s final product. The project may not be suitable for the superstar’s young fans, as the R-rated film will include coarse language, reference of both drugs and alcohol and some inevitably dark comedy.

“The Moment” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival Jan. 23, where it resonated with Charli fans and film connoisseurs alike. Building towards its national release on Feb. 6, ticket sales have already boomed beyond belief, rivaling the popularity of the “SWEAT Arena Tour” itself.
Fans of twisted satirical stories and electric dance-pop beats should consider embracing “The Moment” for an artistic and ever-so-“brat” viewing experience.
“The Moment” will be playing in select theaters Feb. 6.
