Green Rivers Ahead: St. Paddy’s Shenanigans, Loyola Jazz and Creative Workspaces

The weekly Blue Skies Ahead column takes a St. Patrick’s Day twist.

Don’t Irish goodbye the semester yet — the spring break haze is over and school is back in full swing, bringing along warm breezes and an abundance of March festivities. The most important holiday of the college academic year is upon us, so get on the L early to secure a good spot on the river for the annual dyeing of the Chicago River at 10 a.m. March 14 for St. Patrick’s Day.

The shamrock shenanigans continue past the weekend. Ramblers 21+ can kick back and relax Wednesday at Ireland’s Pub, where Loyola’s Jazz Combos will be showcasing their musical talent live. Enjoy a snack or drink at Ireland’s while embracing the beauty of smooth jazz.

Before losing sense with the coming festivities, Jane Austen fans can head to the library near Welles Park for a free screening of “Sense and Sensibility” March 11. Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant await you.

Loyola Jazz at Ireland’s: March 11

Loyola’s Jazz Combos will be performing live on campus 7 p.m. March 11. In the basement of Damen Student Center at Ireland’s Pub, students can enjoy live music with friends and ease their way back into the spring semester.

The Creative Workspace at The Understudy: March 11

Hosted by Jett & Friends, nearby Andersonville’s The Understudy Coffee and Books offers a creative workspace event Wednesdays 7-10 p.m. The space serves as a hands-on environment where guests can let their creative juices flow through journaling and working on other assorted projects. Bring your own supplies to ensure there’s enough to go around.

Sense and Sensibility: Mar. 11

Those looking for a pause from Paddy pandemonium can stop by the Sulzer Regional branch of the Chicago Public Library for a free screening of “Sense and Sensibility” from 5:30-7:45 p.m. March 11.

Green River Celebration at Hoyt’s Chicago: Mar. 14

For St. Patrick’s day, American tavern Hoyt’s Chicago located at 71 E. Wacker Dr. will be hosting an Irish celebration for all. Plan ahead — take the Red Line to Lake and reserve a free spot to enjoy a riverside view of the Chicago River Dying. Patrons can choose from Irish-inspired dishes, cocktails and music. Guests can enjoy the iconic shamrock-shade view from Hoyt’s outdoor patio or main dining room.

Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Mar. 14

Join in to celebrate Chicago’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of the largest festive celebrations in the nation. From 12:30-3:30 p.m., Chicagoans can listen to The Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band perform traditional Irish tunes, observe the vibrant Irish-themed parade floats and watch along as Irish step dancers tap their way down North Columbus Drive. Find a place in the crowd anywhere between East Balbo Drive and West Monroe Street.

Astound Irish Village Market: Mar. 14

Located in front of 401 Michigan Ave., Chicagoans can explore Irish culture for free at the annual Astound Irish Village Market. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, visitors can get their own taste of Ireland through food, beverage, crafts and entertainment vendors March 14.
