The Loyola men’s volleyball team secured a top-15 match-up win against number 13 ranked Ohio State University March 1. Graduate outside hitter Josh Schellinger led with 13 kills for the Ramblers, while redshirt third-year outside hitter Daniel Hurley and second-year outside hitter Stanislaw Chacinski both recorded 13 kills for the Buckeyes.
The first set opened with a kill by Schellinger. The Buckeyes responded immediately with a 6-0 run. Hurley powered the run with three kills, while fourth-year opposite hitter Shane Wetzel added another to their tally. Defensively, third-year middle blocker Eliel Salva-Torres and the Buckeyes forced attack errors by Klein and Fabikovic secured the Buckeyes lead.
The Ramblers grabbed a kill by Schellinger before a service error by fourth-year setter Ryan McEligott, leaving the Buckeyes in the lead 7-2. The lead shortened after a 2-0 run for the Ramblers with a kill by Klein and a service ace by redshirt second-year outside hitter Tyler Howard.
A service error by Salva-Torres ended a trade-off between teams consisting of a block by Salva-Torres and Hurley, a kill by Schellinger and a service error by Klein, leaving the score at 9-6. Howard grabbed another service ace as the Ramblers trailed by only two.
After a trade-off, the Buckeyes took a 3-0 run with a kill by Hurley and a kill by redshirt second-year Aaron Grimm before the pair combined on a block.
After another exchange of tallies, including a kill by Fabikovic, a kill by Grimm and a kill by Klein, the Ramblers trailed 14-10. The Buckeyes extended their lead after a 5-0 run with kills by Salve-Torres, Wetzel, Hurley and a service ace by Wetzel.
Back-to-back kills by Klein and Fabikovic left the score at 19-12. The Buckeyes grabbed two more with a block by Salva-Torres and Buckeyes’ second-year setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez

A kill by Schellinger broke up the Buckeyes’ run. The score rested at 22-14 after back-to-back service errors left the ball with the Ramblers and allowed them to grab another point on a service ace by Howard.
Another trade of service errors gave the Ramblers the opening to take a 3-0 run with a kill by Mikkelsen and a kill by Howard. An exchange of kills by Grimm and Howard left the Buckeyes in position to take the set with a score of 24-19.
The Buckeyes took the first set, 25-20, with a kill by Hurley, but not before an attack error by Grimm to give the Ramblers another tally.
The Ramblers were on the board first in the second set with a kill by Howard, but the Buckeyes tied it up with a kill by Wetzel. An attack error by Howard gave the Buckeyes the lead. Klein responded, tying up the match at twos with a kill. A trade-off on kills by Chachinski and Schlesinger left the game tied at three.
The Buckeyes grabbed two tallies with kills by Hurley and Chachinski before the Ramblers took two of their own with a kill and a service ace by Howard. The game stayed tied at sixes after a service error by Howard and a block by Mikkelsen and McElligott.
A kill by Wetzel was the last point by the Buckeyes before a 5-0 run by the Ramblers with kills by Schellinger and Howard, a service ace by Mikkelsen, a block by Klein and McElligott and a McElligott kill.
The Buckeyes broke the Ramblers’ previous run with a kill by Chachinski before a Rambler 4-0 run with a service error by Chachinski, an attack error by Hurley and back-to-back service aces by McElligott, giving the Ramblers a 15-8 lead.

The third set began with an exchange of points on an attack error by Howard, a kill by Klein, a service error by McElligott and a kill by Klein.
The Buckeyes put up two more with a kill by Wetzel and Hurley. The Ramblers tied the set at four with a kill by Klein and a block by Howard and Mikkelsen. A service error gave the Buckeyes another tally. The Ramblers added two to their total with a kill by Mikkelsen and a service ace by Howard, leaving the score at 6-5.

The Ramblers responded with their own 3-0 run with a ball-handling error by Salva-Torres, a block by Klein and Schellinger and an attack error by Hurley, leaving the set at 24-21.
The Buckeyes closed their gap and left the set tied at 24 with a 3-0 run, including attack errors by Howard and Klein and a kill by Chachinski.
The Ramblers took the third set 26-24 with kills by Fabikovic and Mikkelsen.
The Buckeyes opened up the fourth set with a service ace, followed by a service error by Chachinski, which tied the set at one. A kill by Buckeyes first-year middle blocker Brady Jones and a kill by Klein tied the game at two.
A service error and attack error by Howard gave the Buckeyes two more, extending their lead. The Ramblers came back to tie the set at four with a kill by Howard and a service ace by Klein.
An exchange of points left the score still tied with a kill by Henwood Rodriguez, a service error by Hurley, a kill by Chachinski and one by Fabikovic. A kill by Chachinski gave the Buckeyes the lead 7-6.

A 3-0 run for the Ramblers left the score at 24-21 with back-to-back kills by Schellinger and a kill by Mikkelsen. The Buckeyes responded, going on their own 3-0 run, tying the game at 24, with back-to-back kills by Wetzel and an attack error by Schellinger.
A trade-off of points included a kill by Mikkelsen and an attack error by Schellinger, keeping the score tied. The Ramblers won the match 27-25 with back-to-back kills by Schellinger and Mikkelsen.

The Ramblers recorded a season-high twelve service aces, with half of them coming during the second set. Howard scored a career-high four of those twelve aces. Mikkelsen grabbed a career-high seven blocks. McElligott had a season-high six blocks and took a match and season high 47 assists.
Head coach Shane Davis talked about the quality of the win for the team.
“It was a great win. I’m never gonna downplay a win,” Davis said. “They came out right away and kind of knocked us down in that first set. But nothing was easy tonight. It was a great experience for us to be in those tight sets like that and come out on top as well as we did. So I’m just thankful for that.”
