After enduring another hard winter, Loyola students have finally been rewarded with some t-shirt weather, prompting many to migrate back to the quads and back outdoors. Even though Easter break is still a week away, take advantage of the new season with some fun local events.
Embrace your inner fool this April at a free yoga class, a burlesque bingo night or a kink education class. Then head to Ravenswood to find new trinkets for your collection, or to the Music Box for a new psychological and horror film festival.
April Fool’s Yin Yoga: April 1
This isn’t a prank — decompress and unleash your zen during Phoenix Yoga Projects’ free yoga class April Fool’s Day. Instructor Keralee Gueneviere will lead a beginner-level yoga class at 6 p.m. via Zoom for those of any skill level.
Burlesque Bingo: April 1
Put on your lucky boots — Meeting House Tavern off the Argyle stop will be hosting bingo with a twist of diva every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Hosted by GlaMonster and Reggay Boots, the Burlesque-themed bingo night will feature drinks, glamour and a drive to win. Play for a chance to win the JR GLAM and MAJOR GLAM cash prizes, which grow larger every week until there’s a lucky winner. Ramblers over 21 years old are welcome.
Trinket Fest: April 3-4
Chicago’s biggest trinket fest is back for two days this weekend at 4235 N. Ravenswood Ave. from 12-5 p.m. Visitors will have access to over 100 vendors for $5 dollars, or for free with a pet supply donation for PAWS Chicago. From desserts and tooth gems to pet toys and caricatures, treasures await in a sea of tiny trinkets.
Beyond Chicago Film Festival: April 2-5
The largest genre film festival in the United States is back in Chicago from April 2-5, celebrating over 30 horror and psychological movies in the Music Box Theatre. During the four-day screening fest, film lovers can tune in to contemporary films, cult classics and celebrate cinematography from across the globe. Screenings in theater two are free — passes will be available to Music Box members April 1 and to the general public April 2.
Kink Klass + Hypnosis with Master Leather Redux: April 5
The Leather Archives & Museum is partnering with Master Leather Redux to host a night of learning with a kinky twist. During the first week of each month, the museum will host workshops covering a new taboo topic. This Sunday at 3 p.m., potential freaks of all experience levels can improve their skills through an impact and hypnosis session, tapping into the depths of their mind and discovering the endless possibilities of intimacy. Guests don’t have to partake in anything they aren’t comfortable with.
Shadows of Truth at City Lit Theater: Until April 11
City Lit Theater presents “Shadows of Truth,” a drama following two recent Chicago graduates, Katie and Evey. After the girls move back to their conservative hometown in the South to open a Christian day school for girls, a student accuses the women of being in a sexual relationship. Explore what happens next Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m..
Ava Witherite is the deputy news editor of the paper and is a third-year multimedia journalism major with a minor in marketing. She joined The Phoenix at the start of her sophomore year and has enjoyed newswriting ever since. Some of her interests beyond writing are finding new music, going the gym and playing The New York Times games.
Paige Dillinger is a second-year political science and english double major from Austin, TX, and has been writing for The Phoenix since her first month at Loyola. Her journalism favorites include local politics and investigative stories. She enjoys sunshine on a crisp winter day, movies with scores by John Williams, scoffing at prices in antique stores and SNL when it’s good.
Hunter Minné wrote his first article for The Phoenix during just his first week as a first-year at Loyola. Now in his fourth-year on staff, the Atlanta-native staff writer is studying journalism, political science and environmental communication alongside his work at the paper. For fun he yells at geese.
