Join The Phoenix’s Editorial Board for the 2026-27 Year

The Phoenix is now hiring editors for the 2026-2027 academic year. Those interested must email a cover letter, resume and three work samples — articles, photo essays, page designs, graphics, etc. — to Editor-in-Chief Julia Pentasuglio (jpentasuglio@luc.edu) and Managing Editor Faith Hug (fhug@luc.edu). All applications are due by 11:59pm on Friday, June 12. 

No prior experience or involvement with The Phoenix is required to apply. If applicants would like to be considered for multiple positions, they should note these explicitly in their email subject headings and touch on their interests in each position in the cover letter. 

If applying to multiple positions, please rank the positions from most interested to least interested.

Applicants must be available Sunday and Tuesday evenings.

News Editor

The News Editor is responsible for leading a team of news writers, pitching story ideas, editing weekly stories, designing news section print pages and coordinating coverage of topics like university happenings, local politics, crime, science and business.

The Phoenix is looking for someone with strong news judgement and constant curiosity to lead the section independently and to mentor writers in the art of newswriting and reporting.

News Deputy Editor

The Deputy News Editor assists the News Editor in making section decisions and works closely with writers to answer questions throughout the week. They are responsible for editing first drafts, designing news section print pages and contributing stories when necessary.

Projects Editor

The Projects Editor will work closely with the News, Arts and Sports editors to tackle larger investigative and community-driven stories which require significant attention and longer amounts of time. They will closely follow budgets, university-matters and city happenings to find and break stories. 

The Phoenix is looking for someone who is passionate about investigative journalism and wants to hone their journalism skills by managing long-form projects and working collaboratively with other editors and section writers.

Arts Editor

The Arts Editor is responsible for leading a team of arts writers, pitching story ideas, editing weekly stories, designing arts section print pages and coordinating coverage of local live performances, entertainment releases, Loyola community members and campus events. 

The Phoenix is looking for someone with deep interest in local culture and the arts whose varied expertise will guide writers through production of a wide array of article structures. 

Arts Deputy Editor

The Deputy Arts Editor assists the Arts Editor in making section decisions and works closely with writers to answer questions throughout the week. They’re responsible for editing first drafts, designing arts section print pages and contributing stories when necessary. 

Sports Editor

The Sports Editor is responsible for leading a team of sports writers, pitching story ideas, editing weekly stories, designing sports section print pages, coordinating coverage for all Loyola sports, covering sports news and featuring athletes and events happening in Chicago.

The Phoenix is looking for someone with a passion for sports and strong desire to share Loyola athletes stories with the community by mentoring and supporting sports reporters.

Sports Deputy Editor

The Deputy Sports Editor assists the Sports Editor in making section decisions and works closely with writers to answer questions throughout the week. They are responsible for editing first drafts, designing sports section print pages and contributing stories when necessary.

Opinion Editor

The Opinion Editor is responsible for leading a team of opinion writers, pitching story ideas, editing weekly stories, designing opinion section print pages and overseeing the writing of timely op-eds, personal essays, satires, cartoons and editorials. 

The Phoenix is looking for someone with a strong sense of editorial judgement who will foster writers’ unique voices while ensuring commitment to journalistic ethics.

Opinion Deputy Editor

The Deputy Opinion Editor assists the Opinion Editor in making section decisions and works closely with writers to answer questions throughout the week. They’re responsible for editing first drafts, designing opinion section print pages and contributing stories when necessary. 

Photo Editor

The Photo Editor is responsible for leading a team of photographers, facilitating photo assignments, editing pictures, pitching photo essays and coordinating with other editors and writers to ensure all stories have photos for both print and online editions.

The Phoenix is looking for someone who is passionate about visual storytelling with the strong communication skills needed to guide photographers through the principles of the craft. 

Social Media Editor

The Social Media Editor is responsible for coordinating, creating and editing informative and engaging content for Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Tik Tok. They will also lead a team of content creators who create vertical videos relating to weekly stories. 

The Phoenix is looking for someone who is passionate about storytelling and willing to find creative ways to share content with our audience. A strong candidate would be willing to pitch new ideas to editors and build The Phoenix’s social media presence on par with professional publications.

Deputy Social Media Editor

The Deputy Social Media Editor assists the Social Media Editor in making decisions and works closely with editors, writers and content creators to build a social media schedule every week. They are responsible for editing and contributing content.

Newsletter Editor

The Newsletter Editor is responsible for writing all weekly newsletters sent out by the paper. They are expected to work with writers and editors to understand which stories should be featured. 

The Phoenix is looking for someone with a strong voice to connect with audiences and summarize the biggest headlines of the week. A strong candidate will pitch new ideas for newsletters and expand the topics covered. 

Podcast Manager

The Podcast Manager is responsible for planning and hosting The Phoenix’s weekly podcast, The Byline, where the Podcast Manager will bring on writers, editors and sources to tell stories in the audio format. 

The Phoenix is looking for someone who has a strong idea of how to engage with podcast guests and tell news stories in a conversational and informative way. A strong candidate will expand The Phoenix’s use of audio and add multimedia coverage to the paper.

Translator

The Translator is responsible for translating five to eight stories into Spanish per week.

Crossword Editor

The Crossword Editor is responsible for making the weekly crossword for print and web.

Web Developer

The Web Developer is responsible for the upkeep of The Phoenix’s website and manages any issues which arise. They also make updates and digital changes when required by the Editor in Chief or the Managing Editor.
