Since moving to Chicago, I’ve had the opportunity to try a range of cuisines. Living in the city’s most diverse neighborhood has offered me countless options when deciding to go out to eat. Despite being spoiled with choice, I find myself returning to the same comfort foods time and time again — one of which has become the Chicago dog.

I’ve always preferred hotdogs over hamburgers. The juiciness of the dog always worked perfectly with ketchup and a soft bun. I never felt the need for more toppings that I often saw others at barbecues stuffing in their burger buns. That was until I moved to Chicago and felt obliged to try the dog.

My first Chicago dog felt like a quintessential Chicago moment. I was sitting alone on a street curb on a hot day at Lollapalooza. I had no idea where my friends were, but it didn’t matter. At that moment, it was just me and the dog.

The relish clashed perfectly with the pickles and mustard while my palette was soothed by the tomato and sesame bun. It was gorgeous and since then has become my go-to when I head over to the Devil Dawgs around the corner of the newsroom.

Recently I’ve been reflecting on the things I’ll miss if I end up moving away from Chicago after graduation. Chicago cuisine is often something I take for granted and worry will be unmatched to other cities’ comfort food. That being said, it’s a relief knowing that when I do come back to visit, a reliable and satisfying meal waits for me on almost any block of the city.
