Flash flooding brought on by heavy rainfall in the Chicago area has impacted several Loyola students, as some apartments and dorm buildings flooded this morning, causing damage and disruptions. Flooding also impacted Cudahy Library and the Information Commons (IC) forcing the libraries to close for the day.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning for the greater Chicago area at approximately 9:10 a.m. Sunday morning, lasting until 1:45 p.m. The NWS has since reported multiple roadways in the city have flooded.

Hundreds of residents across the city had their basements flooded and multiple pipes have burst as a result of the storm, Block Club Chicago reported.

Daniel Robbins, a junior studying economics, said he and his roommate returned to their apartment on North Wayne Avenue this morning to find around two inches of water throughout their basement unit.

“We think it’s coming from the drains as well as through the laundry room and entrance door,” Robbins said. “We think there might be sewage in the water because it smells bad.”

Sophomore Greta Miller said her room in Marquette South Hall filled with about an inch and half of water, flowing out of their room’s toilet.

“I saw the front area of the lobby was starting to flood and there was about 3 inches of water against the glass entrance door,” Miller, a film and digital media major, said. “When I opened the door to check the status of the flooding I saw that the water had reached the back wall, past my bed and everything.”

Sophomore psychology major Lilly Allen said the ground floor lobby to their building, near campus on North Kenmore Avenue, has also filled with about two inches of water this morning.

“It smelled really bad,” they said. “I’m assuming the ground floor apartments and laundry room are in pretty bad shape.”

Cudahy Library and the IC were forced to close for the day as a result of the weather according to the LUC Libraries’ Instagram. The facilities are expected to reopen at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12.

Loyola officials did not immediately respond to questions regarding the extent of the flooding in the library facilities. Cudahy Library saw flooding following a similar storm in August 2021, The Phoenix previously reported
