The Loyola men’s golf team took sixth place at their last tournament of the fall season — the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia.
The Ramblers finished with a final stroke count of 901 (298-292-311), falling just 12 behind fifth place finisher Augusta University. KSU won the top honors at their home tournament — their score of 850 (284-278-288) overcame the other nine competing schools. KSU’s second-year Shaun Cook took home the individual honor with a three-round score of 205.
Loyola entered the third-round trailing Augusta by just one stroke, but a tough second day where they carded 311 ensured their sixth place finish. Head coach Erik Hoops said in a Loyola Athletics press release he is optimistic about where the program is at following the season’s conclusion.
“I don’t want our last day here to be how we remember our fall season,” Hoops said. “Some days you tee it up and things don’t go your way but I know the guys battled out there today.”
Second-year Charlie Kulwin led the team with a career-low in his second round, propelling him to finish tied for 12th individually with a total of 218 (76-68-74). First-year Jack Overton finished in 24th, carding a career three-round best with a 225 (72-74-79).
Following Overton was second-year Sebastian Kasun who finished in 32nd. Kasun finished off his fall with a 227 (73-75-79). Meanwhile graduate Zach Walsh ended up in 44th place with a final tally of 233 (77-75-81). Rounding it out for the Ramblers squad was second-year Zach Mulhearn whose 237 (79-79-79) earned him 49th place.
Hoops said the future looks bright for the team because when everything is clicking the team can compete with anyone.
“We’re a very young team and this year was a considerable step up in competition from prior years,” he said. “It’s a step we felt we needed to take as a program to get us ready to win A-10 Championships. Everyone’s scoring averages are down from last fall and we’re learning a lot of lessons that will help us in the future.”
As the colder months take hold, the Ramblers will get a break before Atlantic-10/Mid-American Conference play gets underway in Dade City, Florida Feb. 5-6.
