Halal Guys Restaurant On Sheridan Closes Its Doors After Four Years in Rogers Park

The Halal Guys location at 6474 N. Sheridan Rd. near Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus closed its doors May 19 after serving the Rogers Park community for just under four years.

The fast casual Middle Eastern restaurant first opened in August 2020 filling the space Five Guys left vacant in September 2019, The Phoenix reported. The Halal Guys began as street vendors in New York City in the 1990s and has since franchised throughout the U.S. and internationally, according to their website.

The chain currently operates four locations in the Chicago area. Two are located in the city on West Division Street and North Wabash Avenue, and two are in the suburbs of Skokie and Countryside.

A note posted on the store’s window said the company intends to relocate to a new location.

“After 4 GREAT YEARS, we regret to announce that we will be moving on from this location,” the note reads.

The Halal Guys didn’t respond to The Phoenix’s request for comment.

Nate Taylor, a fourth-year studying political science and global studies, said he thinks it’s terrible another restaurant near Loyola is closing.

“With Rewired burning down last year, Archie’s closing at the end of this summer and now Halal Guys, new students will be coming to a far less vibrant campus.” Taylor said. “Now that the new closest Halal Guys is up in Skokie, it looks like I’ll be falafel-less for the foreseeable future.”

Fourth-year information systems major Georgia Bakopoulos said she liked Halal Guys but prefers other nearby fast food restaurants. She said she hopes the restaurant which fills the space will contribute a new unique flavor to Sheridan Road.

“I’m excited for something new to open up there,” Bakopoulos said. “Ideally they’d bring back IDOF, it was a block away from Halal Guys and their closing and replacement by yet another burger place on Sheridan was truly devastating.”

It is unknown at this time what business will fill the vacant space.
