Blue Skies Ahead: Indigenous Art Market, Legally Blonde and Spring Flowers

We’re pushing through the final weeks of cold in Chicago, making it the perfect time for indoor activities. This week, consider attending the LUCES Art Show or the Loyola Theater Department’s production of “Legally Blonde.” 


Craving some time with nature? Visit the spring flower show at the Garfield Park Conservatory for some flower power in a warm setting. 

Indigenous Artist Pop-Up Market: March 26

The Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum in Evanston is hosting its monthly free admission day March 26, but with a new twist — Indigenous artists will also be staffing a pop-up market. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, head to 3001 Central St. to peruse the various local artist booths.

Legally Blonde: Mar. 28-April 6

The Theatre Department’s performance of “Legally Blonde” opens Friday, March 28 and will run until April 6. Based on the novel by Amanda Brown, the 2001 “Legally Blonde” movie and the play by Heather Hach, this musical will feature all the fan favorite moments as Elle Woods makes her way through Harvard Law School.

Standby or standing room tickets can be purchased on a first-come-first-serve basis an hour before each show or on the Department of Fine Arts website. Few remain, so get yours now for one of the eight performances before they are all gone.

LUCES Art Show: March 28

The Women of Color Initiative within the Center for Diversity and Inclusion is hosting its annual LUCES Art Show Friday, March 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Damen Den. This year’s show is called “Voices Unbound: Storytelling as Resistance,” and the event aims to uplift women of color’s voices with a gallery and artistic performances.

Beach Stewardship: March 30

The Edgewater Environmental Coalition is once again holding its Beach Stewardship Day at Kathy Osterman Beach. This event comes on the last Sunday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and offers volunteers a chance to restore the natural sand habitats and dunes at the beach.

Garfield Park Conservatory Spring Flower Show: Now-May 11

Garfield Park Conservatory is aiming to bring in the spring weather with their installment “Spring Flower Show: Rooted in Mystery.” It’s running from now until May 11 and is free to enter, although you must reserve a ticket

The show will feature a variety of spring growths, including snapdragons, hydrangeas and 26 varieties of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.
